Alhoewel er in de VSA al verschillende jaren een duidelijke behoefte bestond om
normen voor universiteitsbibliotheken vast te leggen, was er geen overeenstem-
ming over de definitie van een “universiteif’, en over de kwestie of er kwalitatieve
dan wel kwantitatieve normen moesten komen. Uiteindelijk koos men voor een
kwalitatieve benadering, ofschoon statistische methodes worden aanbevolen om
bibliotheken met elkaar te vergelijken.

The way in which patent information is used by individuals within industry
and academie research teams has been investigated by a series of case studies.
Additionally a patent publicity scheme was mounted in co-operation with
Newcastle Central Library in an attempt to increase the use of the library’s patent
collection. The results emphasized the similarities rather than the différences
between the problems that users have in using patents and other information
sources. The particular contribution that patents can make in industrial and
academie research was well shown, but if this contribution is to be more widely
recognized then the précisé needs of the end-user must be identified and used to
match the information to the task in hand. Contents : First stage (October 1979-
