<p>En te midden van die dagelijksche strijden, van die angstige stonden, van dit heeu en weér loopen des legers te midden der Kempen, door eene dikke stofwolk omgeven, verzengd door de brandende stralen der zon, bezwijkende aan vermoeienis, honger en dorst, te midden van allerlei smarten der ongelukkige Belgische vrijwilligers, die meenden het vaderland te dienen, en wiens lijden zoo goed door Conscience werd geteekend, wat deed onze koning Leopold I? Hij verplaatste zijn hoofdkwartier naar Leuven en leefde daar zoo onbezorgd, als een koning die een speelreisje in eene zijner steden doet. Terwijl hij gestadig de troepen verminderde der generaals, die iederen oogenblik een gevecht met den vijand te verwachten hadden of er mede handgemeen waren, hield hij, tot zij ne persoonlijke veiligheid, gansch de ruiterij en 2000 mannen der burgerwacht en andere troepen bij zich, die meer dan noodig waren in de legers, welke voor roeping de redding des vaderlands hadden.</p>
<p>Middelerwijl trok het Seheldeleger dat van generaal Daine te gewet, om de samenvoeging der beide krijgsmachten in de omstreken van Diest te bewerken.</p>
<p>Begeven wij ons te midden der Belgische soldaten van het Scheldeleger, dat weldra, na de vernietiging van Daine's troepen, tot eene schandelijke en voorbereide vlucht zal gedwongen worden, dank aan de intrigues en verraderijen van Leopold I 'en zijner omgeving.</p>
<p>De voorwacht van het Belgische leger was op weinigen afstand de achterwacht van het Hollandsche genaderd. Het was midden in den nacht. De troepen legerden in het veld en de soldaten trachtten zich van de onderstane vermoeienissen uit te rusten, zooveel de kille aarde en de geleden honger en dorst het hun toelieten. Alles scheen rustig in de legerplaats. Hier en daar wierp een stervend houtvuur eenige stralen uit en liet eenige</p>
