Object description Meunier maakte van de havenarbeider een icoon, een held. Hoewel hij dagelijks zware lasten draagt, lijkt niets aan het beeld daarnaar te verwijzen. Deze man is een individu en zich daar ook heel erg van bewust. Dit was een thema dat Meunier gedurende meer dan twintig jaar zou blijven uitwerken, in tekeningen, reliëfs en losstaande figuren, met de bedoeling het te verwerken in zijn monument aan de arbeid. De grote buildrager zou hiervoor als één van de vier hoekfiguren dienen. Er werden drie versies van vervaardigd.
