Zoodra gij vijandelijke ,betoogingen op Venloo zult vernemen, zijt gij gelast, generaal, de troepen te vernietigen die zoeken er zich meester van te maken, zonder u om de andere afdeelingen te bekreunen die zich tegenover het Scheldeleger bevinden (I). <p>Het is twee uren in den namiddag. Het ontvangen tegen-bevel heeft eenen nadeeligen invloed OP het leger uitgeoefend. Het eerste was de zekerheid, de vrienden en kennissen, de beslissende strijd in het verschiet; het tweede de onzekerheid, de machtige, goed gewapende Vijand te midden van zijn land in aantocht. En het wantrouwen dat zich vroeger van het leger had meester gemaakt, kreeg nieuw voedsel en maakte zich van velen meester. Generaal Daine, dien verderfelijken invloed ziende, het somber gevoel, dat in zijn hart groeide, willende bevechten, hield weldra eene korte, manhaftige toespraak, reed langs het front van het leger, overal de officieren en soldaten aanluoedigende. Met den degen in de richting wijzende die het leger op moest, riep hij uit : "Soldaten, daar wacht u de vijand! U wordt de eer geschonken hem het eerst aan te vallen! Het vaderland rekent °P u, zijne moedige zonen! Zal het te vergeefs op u hebben gerekend? Neen, niet waar? Moedig, onverschrokken, als luannen gestreden, en aan den vijand getoond dat, hoe sterk</p>
