<p>Alles was gereed, de dag van den opstand gesteld, men kwam tot den dag te voren; iedereen was op zijn post en de bevelhebbers kwamen aan Ponsomby het signaal vragen.</p>
<p>« Alles is veranderd, zegt deze; er is geen spraak meer van den prins van Oranje, er is hier eene andere kandidatuur noodig, gij moet Leopold, prins-van Saxen-Coburg,kiezen. En daarmede verliet hij de Orangisten en hunne partij. De samenzweerders begrepen niets van de daad des Engelschen agent en, zonder hoofd, zonder leider, moesten zij het opgeven, wat ook gebeurde. Holland had nu op niets anders meer te rekenen dan op zijne wapenen, als de mogendheden het lieten vechten, wel te verstaan.</p>
<p>De kandidaturen der hertogen van Nemours, van Leuchtenberg, de prinsen van Oranje en anderen, van de hand gewezen of gevallen zijnde, zoo stond Leopold gansch alleen om den troon te beklimmen; daarbij ondersteund door Engeland, wiens agent bij was Leopold I was getrouwd met de Engelsche prinses Charlotte stegen zijne kansen dagelijks. Doch Frankrijk verzette zich tegen de aanvaarding van Leopold en stelde de verdeeling van Belgie voor. Met vele Sluwheid had het de rechterzijde van de Maas met de steden Maastricht, Ruremonde en Luik, in zijn ontwerp aan Pruisen afgestaan.</p>
<p>Engeland dat er niet van hield Pruisen zoo dicht de Schelde en de zee te zien, en dan nog steunende op zulke sterke positiën, verzette zich daar hardnekkig tegen. Daarbij wilden Pruisen, Oostenrijk en Rusland er niet van weten een grondwettelijk koningdom, dat zij vreesden, te zien geboren werden en konden op die voorwaarden in do kandidatuur van Leopold niet toestemmen. Engeland dat kost wat kost een zijner sujecten over Belgie Wilde zien regeeren, stelde het huwelijk van Leopold met eene zijner dochters aan den koning van Frankrijk voor.
