<p>verklaarde zijne plaats in de landsvertegenwoordiging slechts voor de bajonnetten te verlaten, gingen zij er niet heen.</p>
<p>De scheiding van Belgie met Holland onder dezelfde dynastie, maar met eene afzonderlijke grondwet en bestuurlijke regeling, werd op het stadhuis door de gekozene burgers, die daar feitelijk meester waren, uitgesproken.</p>
<p>De prins van Oranje beloofde bij zijn vader de verdediger van de rechten der Belgen te zijn, deed de troepen de stad verlaten en vertrok op zijne beurt naar Den Haag.De soldaten vertrokken op hunne zokken om alle botsing met de bevolking te vermijden. Het verlaten der hoofdstad in zulke gespannen °ogenblikken werd den prins door verscheidene invloedrijke Mannen als eene fout aangerekend, en zij gingen zelfs zoo ver te beweren dat daarin de voornaamste oorzaak van het uitbersten des huidigen opstands en der mogelijke scheiding tusschen de beide landen besloten ligt.</p>
<p>Dat is valsch geredeneerd. De prins kon in Brussel niets doen dan zijn vel verliezen, zonder daardoor te kunnen tegenhouden wat thans gebeurt. Inderdaad, er kwam eene steeds grootere republikeinsche storming .onder de arme bevolking die de ziel van den opstand was en het waren slechts de rijke burgers, welke met de bestuurlijke scheiding des rijks voor den dag kwamen. Wat kon de prins hier doen? De grieven bevredigen? Neen, hij was noch koning, noch aanvoerder der meerderheid in de Generale Staten. Zich aan het hoofd des opstands stellen en de bestuurlijke scheiding der Nederlanden in zijn vaandel voeren? Dat ware nog zotter, want dan kreeg hij gansch Holland, met zijn vader aan het hoofd, wellicht de Europeesche mogendheden, maar voorzeker ons arm volk en onze geestelijkheid tegen zich het volk van Brussel en der omliggende gemeenten, omdat het van de Oranje's niet meer wilde weten en de republiek pisehte ; de geestelijkheid, omdat zij evenmin vrij kon</p>
