<p>Dit pijnlijk spel nam weldra een einde, maar de volkswraak nog niet. Voortman werd van den boom gerukt en vooruit gestuwd met den kreet: Naar het stadhuis! naar het stadhuis!</p>
<p>Doch pas had de menigte oenige stappen gedaan, toen als een loopend vuur het gerucht zich verspreidde, dat burgerwachten en vrije korpsen in aantocht waren om het volk aan te vallen en Voortnaan te verlossen.ln een oogwenk waren de mannen en vrouwen, tot zelfs de kinderen van kassijelen voorzien en zoo tot eenen hardnekkigen tegenstand besloten dat, toen de gewapende benden zich vertoonden, zij op een regen van straat-granaten werden onthaald, die hun alle lust tot den aanval ontnam en hun het hazenpad deed kiezen. Juichend over deze vlucht trok het volk naar den Botermarkt, steeds zijn slachtoffer medevoerende. Daar vond het de heeren der stedelijke overheid, waaronder den advokaat Desoutere, die zich °ogenblikkelijk te midden. der menigte begaf. Met eenige gewapende mannen was het hem gelukt tot aan Voortman door te dringen, juist op het oogenblik dat deze zich heel nabij de stadsgevangenis, Illammenlokker geheeten, bevond.</p>
<p>Op eens begon de advokaat Desoutere te roepen: Hier met den schurk, hij heeft er al te lang geloopen, levert hem maar aan ons over, hij zal wel zijn deel hebben!</p>
<p>De menigte geloofde den slimmen advokaat, die, gebruik makende van de kortstondige vrijheid welke men hem liet,den fabriekant Voortman in de geopende stadsgevangenis duwde. Die list ging ten volle gelukken, toen een pompier, de fabriekant ziende ontsnappen zonder hem weder te kunnen vatten, hem met de bajonnet van zijn geweer eene geweldige steek onder den rug gaf,dat het bloed uit de wonde stroomde.</p>
