<p>mevrouw Van Acken van hare ontsteltenis bekomen, of nieuwe, doch thans woeste kreten stegen uit het volk op, weldra door een hevig geweervuur gevolgd. De 'burgers en vrije korpsen hadden de werklieden aangevallen en dezen verdedigden zich met razernij.</p>
<p>Mevrouw Van Acken en Grietje hadden de meeste moeite der wereld om Paul terug te houden, die zich op nieuw te midden des gevechts wilde begeven, om door woorden van liefde en troost het bloedvergieten te doen eindigen. Eindelijk bezwijkende onder hunne smeekingen, wierp hij zich weenend en wanhopig op een stoel neder, de handen voor de oogen geslagen, om geen getuige der slachting te zijn. Middelerwijl had pastoor De Wilde zich aan het venster geplaatst en bleef van daar, de armen op de borst gekruist, de trekken wild en woest, het gevecht aanschouwen.</p>
<p>Mevrouw Van Acken en Grietje bij toeval een blik op hem slaande, deinsden verschrikt achteruit. Die man had hun afschuw ingeboezemd. Het gevecht werd weldra algemeen. Het regende kassijden. De burgers bleven niet ten achteren en vuurden zoo snel en zoo moordend als zij konden. De gebeurtenissen van den dag hadden het volk zoodanig verbitterd, dat het vermaak in den strijd scheen te vinden en de gewapende macht hoegenaamd niet meer vreesde. Niet lang duurde het gevecht, toen eensklaps een troep werklieden de burgers op stormpas te gemoet liepen, hun vooreerst met eene lading straatsteenen begroetende. Die stoute aanval werkte beslissend op de groote menigte, die weldra gansch den troep volgde, zich Op de burgers en vrije korpsen wierp en hun voor de tweede maal dwong de plaats te ontruimen. Eelt nieuwe zegekreet steeg uit 's volks borst op. Helaas! wat kon dien triomf baten? Niets, want het volk had hoegenaamd geen doel, geene kennis van wat het eischen en veroveren moest buiten een goed loon, goedkoope levensmiddelen en niet te veel dwang op werkhuizen en fabrieken.</p>
