<p>Toen Paul zijne moeder en Grietje voor de vechtenden had verlaten, waren de beide vrouwen hem tot aan de deur gevolgd. Hare tweede moeder als waanzinnig van smart ziende en een nog grooter ongeluk vreezende, smeekte Grietje haar de kamer niet te verlaten. Mevrouw Van Acken wilde echter voorts en daar had er bijna een strijd plaats. Hij was van zeer korten duur, want de ongelukkige weduwe, door lijden geknaakt, door droefheid overstelpt, zonk bezwijmend neer. Het arme kind had in de eerste oogenblikken niet geweten wat doen en slechts na ongeloofelijke pogingen hare tweede moeder op een stoel kunnen brengen; daar was ook zij neder gezonken en door Paul gevonden.</p>
<p>Zijn verschijnen rukte haar uit hare bedwelming. Pastoor De Wilde bemerkende die Paul op de kamer was gevolgd, kon zij een kreet van afschuw niet onderdrukken, want dien priester noemde zij steels den moordenaar van vader Willem.</p>
<p>Paul, dien kreet hoorende en radende wat er in Grietje's hart omging, zeide haar kort, maar op zachten toon, die voor haar vol beteekenis was.</p>
<p>Grietje, de heer De Wilde is mijn gast.</p>
<p>Die weinige woorden waren voldoende om de opwelling van haat bij het jonge meisje te onderdrukken, en terwijl Paul zijne moeder tot haar zelve bracht, deed zij voor den priester alles wat de ontvangst van een vriend des huizes vereischte.Het beven haan lichaams verried enkel nog eenige ontroering.</p>
<p>Door de goede zorgen van Paul, door het hooren zijner stem, herstelde mevoouw Van Acken spoedig.</p>
<p>Doch alsof de wreede gebeurtenissen gezworen hadden dien dag elkander om te snel op te volgen, nauwelijks was</p>
<p>die bleek en ontdaan opeen stoel nederlag.Bij dit tooneel stiet hij een angstkreet uit en snelde naar zijne moeder om haar te helpen. Was zij dood? Neen, gelukkiglijk, maar toch verkeerde zij in een bedenkelijken toestand.</p>
