<p>Boven het vuur des gevechts, boven de vlammen der in brand geschoten huizen, boven gansch dit tooneel van verwoesting en dood schitterde eene zon, de zon der vrijheid. 't Was zij die de opstandelingen aanvuurde, aan haar brachten de stervenden hun laatsten groet. En even, als een zonnestraal in eene kamer dringt, men millioenen dooreen wemelende stofdeeltjes ontwaart, die tot aan den fakkel der wereld schijnen te willen opklimmen, zoo woelden in Brussel (luizende strijders dooreen, door het licht der vrijheidszon als overgoten en reuzenpogingen inspannende om tot haar te genaken. De 23 September was met het vuur der Hollanders begonnen en met dat der Belgen geëindigd. De Hollanders hadden zich van verscheidene straten meester gemaakt en bezetteden de boulevards, waarop zij gedurende den nacht kampeerden. De geduchte en onverwachte tegenstand die zij ontmoet hadden, was van gewicht genoeg om hun de moeielijkheid van den strijd, de vastberadenheid en het getal der opstandelingen aan te toonen en aan prins Frederik het voorgevoel te schenken dat zijne militaire wandeling eene voor hein dreigende wending nemen kon. De nacht was gevallen en met hem de strijd geëindigd. En waar waren de verdedigers der barrikaden?, In hun huis. De barrikaden waren niet meer door den vijand bedreigd en de opstandelingen hadden ze verlaten. Slechts hier en daar stond er een man op wacht en op vele plaatsen, was er niemand te vinden, om in geval van nood het alarm te</p>
<p>geven. Die onachtzaamheid was zoo verre gedreven dat verscheidene Belgische geschiedschrijvers der Omwenteling, ondec anderen Theodoor.Juste, bekennen dat, hallen de Hollanders</p>
