<p>De zege der Hollanders was beslissend. De opstandelingen werden duchtig achteruit geslagen. Daar kwamen versche Noord-Nederlandsche troepen de straat ingestormd, om de overwinning te voltooien en zooveel voordeel mogelijk uit de vervolging hunner vijanden en uit eene snelle inneming der straten te trekken.</p>
<p>Doch nauwelijks zijn de eerste soldaten aan de plaats gekomen waar een afzichtelijke hoop van lijken, kassijden, steengruis enz., de vroegere barrikade en de hardnekkigheid van het daar geleverde gevecht toonde, of daar wordt het zelfde venster door den zelfden grijsaard geopend. Een snijdende kreet uitstootende, wierp hij met al de kracht van zijn ontvleesden arm een ketel vol kokend water naar de zegepralende Hollanders. Was dit een signaal of sleepte die daad allen mede die haar van voor hun venster hadden bewonderd? Ik weet het niet, maar zeker is het, dat pas de schreeuw uitgestooten en de ketel geslingerd, vijftig, honderd, twee honderd, nog veel meer vensters zich openden en van uit die zonderlinge schietgaten niet alleenlijk ketels, maar potten, pannen, tin,- ijzer, koperwerk, beelden, stoelen, kannen, ledige en volle koffers, stukken oud versleten, ja zelfs kostelijk huisgerief, alles, alles in een woord wat de Brusselaars onder de handen viel naar de verraste Hollanders werd geslingerd.</p>
<p>Het was een regen, een stortregen van keuken-granaten en bommen uit de slaapkamer, die losbarste op de hoofden der soldaten, den eenen kwetsend, den anderen van zijn paard slaande, een derden bloedend ten grond werpende, maar allen verschrikkende omdat zij er geen eind aan zagen, er zich niet tegen beschutten konden en aan zulk een aanval in de verste verte niet hadden gedacht. Het was een echt bombardement van huisgerief en meubel' stukken, dat van al de verdiepen tegelijk op den vijand neér'</p>
