<p>Brussel een standbeeld hebben opgericht in zijn meesterlijk werk, Catastrophe du mois d'Aoi'tt 1831, er ons niet de onloochenbaarste en tevens de verpletterendste bewijzen van gegeven had. Dat boek, hetwelk door een toeval in onze handen gekomen is, door een der rechtzinnigste burger-patrioten geschreven; dit boek, dat Gendebien in het licht gaf alvorens den laatsten adem uit te blazen, omdat hij de bewijzen der misdaad niet mede in het graf wilde voeren; dit boek, hetwelk eene onuitwischbare brandmerking, een verpletterende beschuldigingsakt tegen het Regentschap, tegen koning Leopold I en de Europeesche diplomaten is, werd door den schrijver kosteloos aan alle boekerijen des legers en anderen gezonden, maar op last des gouvernements overal verboden en vernietigd. Maar het idee, de waarheid kunnen niet vernietigd worden. Zijn werk heeft Gendebien overleefd en van op zijn voetstuk, met zijn bronzen mond slingert hij nog zijn vloek naar onze vroegere beheerschers en beulen, en eischt hij nog verachting C n straf voor de nagedachtenis vau, hen, die uit domheid of Slechtheid een der grootste gruwelen pleegden, welke ooit in '8 menschen brein is ontstaan. Wij zullen dus met het boek van den heer Gendebien in de hand, zijne taak voortzetten en de bespreking aanvangen van de ramp der maand Augusti 1831. Doch alvorens daaraan te beginnen, willen wij eenige Woorden tot onze lezers richten. Wij hebben het volle bewustzijn van de gevaarlijke taak die wij gaan ondernemen. Hoe hoog de vrijheid van het Woord en der drukpers in ons land wordt geroemd,de gevangneming van verscheidenen onzer vrienden, de vervolging onzer dagbladen, hebben ons genoeg bewezen dat die vrijheid verdwijnt zoodra het den persoon des konings geldt. Men heeft hier eenen heiligen eerbied voor den man, die zich zoo Weinig eerbiedigde en voor de instelling, wiens slechte</p>
