<p>Gedurende een geruimen tijd bleef hij onder den indruk dezer sombere voorspelling. Het was alsof hij reeds de wreede beschuldiging hoorde, die gansch zijn eerlijk leven, zijne loopbaan van getrouwen, moedigen soldaat kwam bezoedelen, vernietigen. Generaal Niellon staarde, pijnlijk wachtend, zijn krijgsmakker en overste aan en begon reeds te hopen dat hij hem had overhaald en de vereeniging, ondanks allen en alles, zou kunnen bewerken. Maar neen, evenals de aide de eamp Capiaumont zijn stout en praktisch plan door generaal Daine verworpen zag, zoo werden de voorstellen en plannen van Niellon door de Tieken van de hand gewezen. Voor de tweede maal dus kwam de slaafsche gehoorzaamheid van een generaal de kuiperijen der diplomaten in de hand werken.</p>
<p>De Tieken gaf niet toe en het Scheldeleger trok naar Aarschoot op, Daine alleen tegenover gansch de Hollandsche krijgsmacht latende. Wat wonderbare, wat koortsachtige bedrijvigheid legde het hoofdkwartier van koning Leopold niet aan den dag, om den marsch van Tieken tegen te houden en hem ver van de Ware strijdplaats te zenden! Vier dépèches stuurt het hem in min dan vier uren om hem den aftocht naar Aarschoot te bevelen. En niet één bevel Wordt aan generaal Daine gestuurd, om hem van die taktiekverandering te verwittigen, om hem te zeggen, dat hij alleen tegenover de Hollanders zal staan, om hem te bevelen stil te staan, terug te wijken, ten einde niet door de Hollanders Omsingeld en verpletterd te worden. Orders op orders, dépéches op dépéches, om de krijgsverrichtingen der beide generaals te vernietigen, op het oogenblik dat zij wellicht tot schitterende uitslagen gaan aanleiding geven, en niet één woord, niet één regel om de beslissende nederlaag van Daine's krijgsmacht te beletten.</p>
