<p>Dus, het Congres was nog niet bijeen geweest, men wist nog niets over zijne samenstelling, noch over zijne zienswijze en reeds was men op zoek naar een koning. Men haast zich zoo niet voor iets dat men niet gaarne ziet komen, en die spoed zelve verraadt te veel liefde voor het koningdom, om er ons door te laten foppen.</p>
<p>Te Londen zeide Wellington tot Van de Weyer, dat het Engelsch gouvernement niet wilde tusschenkomen, noch invloed uitoefenen op den keus van het Belgisch Bestuur, maar hij hoopte dat dit gouvernement niet eene republiek zou worden.</p>
<p>Voorwaar, zonderlinge manier van niet tusschen te komen en geen invloed uit te oefenen. Die hoop van Wellington, den machtigen Engelschen minister en generaal, was een bevel, op de wijze der diplomaten gegeven.</p>
<p>Men ziet het reeds, Belgie was in handen der diplomaten en nog wel in die der Engelschen, de slechtsten van allen.</p>
<p>Wat het Congres nu ook stemde, Belgie's lot was beslist. Het mocht niet eene republiek worden. Het moest dan een koningdom zijn. En wie kon koning in ons land worden? Wie? Het gezond verstand zal het ons zeggen. Redeneeren wij.</p>
<p>De mogendheden laten de omwenteling uitbreken, gelukken en doen niets, beslissen niets tegen haar. Dit toonde dat van den beginne af alle de groote Europeesche Staten in de scheiding toestemden, of dat de partijen voor en tegen de scheiding, onder haar zóó verdeeld waren, dat zij zich gelijk sterk bevonden. Dit was een voorteeken dat de dysnatie van Oranje weinig, bijna geene kans had door de mogendheden op den troon van Belgie te worden hersteld. Daar het Belgisch Congres de familie van Oranje voor goed van den troon vervallen had verklaard, was voor haar de laatste hoop vervlogen. De scheiding was gebeurd en bleef beslist en al wat de diplomaten sinds dien deden, om den prins van Oranje tot koning der Belgen te doen uitroepen, was eenvoudigweg leugen en bedrog om hun waar spel te verduiken.</p>
