The Castle of the Princes of Grimberghe, erected in the XV cent., now belongs to the Count de Merode Westerloo. It is built round 3 sides of a quadrangle, the interior facades were all rebuilt 1767-74 : those on the exterior have in great part preserved their original appearance; the W. wing has 2 towers the loftiest of which was formerly the keep. The Chapel ded. to S. Nicholas, & room ornamented with scenes of Flemish life in the style of Teniers, and a gallery of family portraits of the ancient possessors of the castle, amongst which are 7 fulllength figures of knights of the Golden Fleece of the family of De Bergues, 1531-1710, are well worth inspection. In the Church of Beyewem, a small edifice rebuilt in the last cent. with the exception of the choir and trans., are 4 fine paint- ings of the early Flem. school: the first of these, an Ecce Homo, hears the arms of Sir John de Bergues, Lord of Grimberghe, 1519- 36; the 2nd, repr. Christ led. before Caiphas, the Scourging, the Crowning with thorns, and soldiers throwing dice for the seamless coat, hears the monogram P. R.; the 3rd repr. the Crucifixion and the Descent into Limbo; and the 4th the Resurrection, the risen Saviour appearing to His mother, also to Mary Magdalene in the garden. In composition and colouring these, especially the 4st and 8rd, much resemble the works of R. Van. der Weyden the younger. At Mrysse is a fine 3 aisled Church; the apsidal choir dates from c. 1500, the nave from 1626, the aisles from 1634-41, the lower, burnt by lightning, was rebuilt in 1733. In the Choir are 2 stained glass windows repr. S. Martin and S. George by J. B. Cap- ronnier, 1843. The Castle of Bouchout, erected in the XII cent., hut much altered in“1602 and restored in 1832 by J. Suys, contains a fine collection of works of art; the windows of one room
