Full text | FELIS TRIST FONTANIER'S SPOTTED CAT. LIS TRISTIS, Ap. Min-Baw, Reside Mame. (1872) p23, pl xe Hap. China, Ztehuan? (Foxtaxten). ras first characterized by ML. Alphonse Milne-Bawards(/.c.); but beyond the fact that ntanier at Pekin, and that it was said to have come from the interior of China, nothing skin was in a very bad condition; and the skull was wanting. In size this animal would scom to be about equal to F. pardina, ox the Spans 83 inches in length fiom the nose to the root of the tal, while the tail itself s 16 inches long. My des rere given were taken from the type, at present unique in urope; but before we can arrive at a satidatory idea of the animal's appearance we must wait for the acquisition of perfect specimens. At present, so far as I ean judge, it seems to have some affinity to Felis marmorata in the shape and distribution ofits markings, and in the Tong bushy tal Fur aoft and long. General colour ligt bluish grey, inlining to yellowish. Three or four blackish brown lines, beginning in the centre of the head, between the eas, run along the whole length of the back; ret of body, flanks, and legs covered with large spots of dark brown. Underparts lighter than the upper, les profusely marked and spotted with brown, Two bars of ras brown pass across the upper part of the breast. ‘Tail very long and bushy, rufous brown above, yellowish brown beneath, the upper part presenting a series of obscure dark brown bars |
