Toen ik niets meer achter mij zag noch hoorde, ging ik op mijn gemak voort om wat adem te halen, een weinig het bloed te stelpen dat nog altijd uit mijne wond liep en ook uit vrees door mijn loopen het wantrouwen van de schildwacht der barrikade op te wekken en mij door een zijner kogels te doen neérschieten, op het ogenblik dat ik van de Hollanders bevrijd was.</p>
<p>Na eenigen tijd rustens, naderde ik langzaam de verschansing, met opzet de verlichte plaatsen der straat kiezende, ggp. niet als spion aanzien te worden.</p>
<p>Toen ik haar reeds heel nabij was, werd ik nog niets gewaar. Dit verwonderde mij grootelijks ; ik bleef staan en riep zoo luid ik kon : Héla, mannen der wacht! Geen antwoord krijgende, riep ik op nieuw, de barrikade meer en meer naderende. Mijn herhaald geroep bracht mij weder niets uit, vrienden, en wel om de heel natuurlijke rede, dat er daar aan dien gewichtigen post, noch schildwacht, noch nachtwaak, niemand in één woord te zien was en dat de barrikade gansch alleen en verlaten stond.</p>
<p>Alléén en verlaten! riepen verscheidene aanhoorders tegelijk uit, elkander verbáasd en verschrikt aanziende.</p>
<p>Ja, alléén en verlaten, ging Victor voort, en stelt u mijne verwondering voor, toen ik antwoord kreeg, niet van op of van achter de barrikade, maar van uit de derde verdieping eener woning, in hare nabijheid gelegen. Inderdaad, een der,bewoners, door de twee schoten ontwaakt, zooals hij mij later vertelde, vroeg mij wat ik behoefde. Heel kort verhaalde ik hem wat er gebeurd was. Om mij te doen verstaan moest ik bijna schreeuwen, wat het ontwaken der geburen en het openen van verscheidene vensters voor gevolg had.</p>
