scheme is to provide a controlled retrieval language for the literature of library and
information science which will assist the making and use of several types of index - through
surrogation in catalogues and bibliographies and through direct arrangement of the physi-
cal documents on the shelf and in filing cabinets.”
The language is presented as a faceted classification. To this vocabulary is added : (1)
Rules for combining terms into compound subjects ; (2) A linear order for ail terms,
elementary and compound ; (3) A notation to maintain this order in a mechanical fashion
(for documents on shelves, or entries in catalogues and bibliographies) ; (4) An A/Z order
to the elementary terms of the Schedule. The classification is designed to serve both

2.	Bouw en inrichting
BIBLIOTHEKSPLANUNG in Kanada ; Program und Standortwahl der Zentralbibliothek von
Metropolitan Toronto ; eine Studie. Berlin, Deutscher Bibliotheksverband und Arbeitsstelle
für das Bibliothekswesen, 1973. (Bibliotheksdienst, Beiheft96).
Deze studie bevat een uitvoerig en gedetailleerd organigram, tevens een beleidsvisie en
tot slot overwegingen m.b.t. de vestigingsplaats van de nieuwe centrale openbare biblio-
theek van het regionale bibliotheeksysteem Toronto, met een oppervlakte van 624 km2 en
met een bevolking van meer dan twee miljoen inwoners. De nieuwe centrale bibliotheek,
met een totale vloeroppervlakte van 36.160 m2 wordt inmiddels gebouwd en wordt wellicht
in de loop van 1976 voor het publiek opengesteld.
Het bibliotheeksysteem zelf wordt uitvoerig beschreven en daaruit blijkt reeds dat een
viertal alternatieven konden vooropgesteld worden voor de keuze van een nieuwe vestigings-
plaats. Diverse afbeeldingen, o.m. schema’s van de organisatiestruktuur, de struktuur van
het bibliotheeksysteem en binnen- en buitenperspektieven van de nieuwbouw verlevendigen
deze op zichzelf ietwat steriele materie, in het bijzonder omdat vergelijkbare grootheden
in ons land niet voorhanden zijn. E.H.
