This book is an up-to-date version of Information storage and retrieval.- tools,
elements, théories, by J. Becker and R. M. Hayes, 1963. Hardware, materials and
processes used in connection with information Systems are discussed first in chap-
ters 2 through 4. The subject of information retrieval per se begins with chapters 5
and 6, which have to do with librarianship and documentation. Chapter 7 presents
a simplified concept of an information system and its components, and paves the
way for discussion of computerised retrieval in chapter 8 and document retrieval in
chapter 9. Chapters 10 to 12, on language processing, évaluation, and user studies,
describe important facets of the information retrieval field that have developed
