Object description Dit doek maakt deel uit van een reeks van 6 die de Scheldekaaien in de 17de en 19de eeuw portretteren en 2 doeken die 'Antverpia' en 'Schelde Vrij' verbeelden. Tot 2019 sierden ze de muren van de feestzaal van de Handelsbeurs (Borzestraat, Antwerpen). Ze bedekten meer bepaald de glasramen en spitsbogen. Bij de restauratie van de Handelsbeurs werden deze weer vrijgemaakt waardoor de schilderijen er geen plaats meer hadden. De Antwerpse decoratieschilder Felix Augusteyns schilderde ze tussen 1888 en 1894, vermoedelijk naar aanleiding van de wereldtentoonstelling in Antwerpen in 1894. Toen werd een replica van de stad nagebouwd, 'Oud Antwerpen', met ook een Borse-straat en een 16de-eeuws beursgebouw. Dit schilderij toont een praalwagen met vooraan een beeld van Antverpia, de Maagd van Antwerpen. Ze draagt een spandoek met de slogan “Schelde Vrij”. Op de praalwagen staan vlaggen van verschillende landen. De Belgische vlag, met jaartal 1885, staat bovenaan. Het jaartal verwijst mogelijk naar de Antwerpse wereldtentoonstelling van 1885. Het spandoek met “Schelde Vrij” herinnert aan de tolheffing op de scheepvaart op de Schelde die in voege was van 1585 tot 1863. Ter ere van deze tolvrije Schelde werd in 1883 ook het standbeeld op het Marnixplein ingehuldigd, een ingreep die diende om de nieuwe Zuidwijk op te smukken voor de wereldtentoonstelling van 1885.
