Husent. Inns:H. des Pays-Bas; — H. de la Poste. 1927 fahahs. A smalltown occupying a clearance in the midst of a iagnificent forest which has a circumference of 40m. -It derives 3 name from one of the greatest Bishops who occupied the see f Liege in the middle ages. S. Hubert belonged to the Merovin- iglian race, being descended from Clotaire Il; having been sent sidoung to the court of Neustria, he was made Count of Paris; ianished from thence by King Thierry, at the instance of Ebroin, se sought refuge with Pepin of Herstal. He afterwards married, { jnut his wife dying in giving birth to her first child, he resolved fs 9 abandon the world, and, having resigned his Duchy of Aqui- otimine to his brother, he retired to Maestricht, and hecame a dis- o{giple of S. Lambert, who sent him on a pilgrimage to Rome ‘and shaade him consult the Pope as to bis future life. Shortly after $ arrival at Rome the news of S. Lambert’s martyrdom reached | s4he Pope, who, divining that Bishop’s intention, appointed S. Hu- gpert his successor. “| The Ansey originally founded by Pepin of Herstal at Amberloux ; sm the Ourthe, 6 m. from here, was removed hither, c. 825, when (anbe body of S. Hubert was brought from Liege. The Church, a ; aisled cruciform building, erected 1526-90, is lofty and fine, but ih as disfigured by a W. front of the XV VWI cent.; beneath the choir, oitf¥which has double aisles and chapels, is a crypt. The interior is jpdorned with precious marbles; the high altar, stalls, etc., are good segspecimens of late carving, 1728-60. In the first chapel of the YN. Choir Amb. are a stained glass window and the monument iii Hof the Saint, an altar-tomb with recumbent effigy in white marble - Hrjand 8 bas-reliefs by W. Geefs, 1850: in the chapel next beyond iithis is preserved the stole of 5. Hubert, by the application of i@which, it is said, many cases of hydrophobia have been cured. 48. Hubert, whose body is said to be in a vault beneath the church, is the patron of hunters and sportsmen, and is usually represented ac¢kneeling before a stag bearing a cross growing between its horns, - ydby which apparition it is said he was converted from a life of gaiety and worldliness to one of penance and prayer. In ancient -ocoriitimes the abbat of S. Hubert paid the King of France an annual dtribute of 3 leash of stag-hounds. The abbatial buildings, re- 09 constructed in the XVIII cent., were in great part demolished at aiiathe French Rev.; what escaped now serves as a penitentiary. | E 23, Spa Ls eecn DNS ETULRCS Ea vO eC eel |
