<p>Een gevoel van fierheid en tegenzin voor aalmoesen, had haar in den beginne het voedsel bitter als gal gemaakt en haar doen lijden, maar nu date zij een dienst bewees, en ‘, betaalde met zorgen, liefde en oogenschijnlijke vergelijking, was haar leven haar niet meer als eene misdaad tegenover die familie voorgeschenen. En naarmate de welstand in de familie verminderde, had zij er ook op aangedrongen om te mogen werken, ten einde ook haar penning in de kas te kunnen storten en het verval langzamer en min gevoeliger te maken. Mevrouw Van Acken had zulks geweigerd en ook het werk was er zoo schaarsch. Dan had zij een oogenblik gedacht om dit huis te verlaten, omdat zij het zich verweet bij die edele harten de nood te doen helpen stijgen. Ja, dat denkbeeld was een oogenblik in haren geest gekomen, er in gegroeid, maar zij had geschrikt bij de herinnering aan hare moeder en aan haar lot, geschrikt bij het zien der woelingen en der ellende in het land, bij het denken aan de toekomst, bij het verkregen bewustzijn, dat zij niet tot heldin was gebouwd, maar zij had het meest geschrikt voor zij wist niet welk gevoel dat haar aan dit huis hechtte, en bij het denkbeeld zelve van het te verlaten.</p>
<p>Er was in haar hart een nieuw gevoel ontstaan, eene snaar, wier bestaan zij niet vermoedde, had daar getrild en haar tot dit oogenblik nog ongekende aandoeningen geschonken. Soms' was zij gejaagd, het bloed steeg haar naar het hoofd en het was als vuur dat door hare aderen liep; andere malen was zij droefgeestig, bijna kwijnend en de naald latende vallen, het hoofd op de borst gehangen of naar de wolken gekeerd, kon zij, zoo niet in diepe gedachten zijn verzonken,</p>
