<p>Van mond tot mond, van dorp tot dorp, van stad tot stad liep het bericht van den triomf der opstandelingen en bracht overal de bevolking in denzelfden geestdrift en een doodelijken slag aan de Hollanders. Eenige dagen bezaten deze laatsten van gansch ons land slechts Antwerpen en Maastricht meer. Belgie was dus, dank den barrikadenstrijd der hoofdstad, beslissend vrij geworden. Aan wie heeft ons land nu zijne : onafhankelijkheid te danken? Aan wie? Wij zeiden het reeds verscheidene malen : aan de armen, aan het volk, aan zijnen moed en opofferingsgeest. Dit is een historiesch feit, dat niet genoeg kan herhaald worden, dat alle werklieden zich moeten i in den geest prenten, omdat het de loonslaven tot eere strekt en aan de burgers schijnt toe te roepen : verdrukkers en dieven der vruchten door 's volks lijden en bloed gewonnen. Om iedereen te overtuigen dat ons oordeel niet partijdig, maar waar is, laten wij hier een uittreksel volgen uit een werkje : Ons Nationaal Jubelfeest, in 1879 te Brussel verschenen en door den opsteller van een burgersblad geschreven: « Wanneer die mannen uit het volk gedurende vier dagen moedig tegen den dood gestreden en een heldenwerk tot de overwinning der vrijheid en de verheerlijking des Vaderlands verricht hadden, keerden zij zwart van het poeder naar hun huis terug, zoo onderworpen aan ellende en nijverheidskrisissen als vóór den slag, maar zij waren in de ziel verblijd alsof zij eene fortuin veroverd hadden. Moedig, braaf volk, vergeten wij nooit wat het gedaan heeft voor de overwinning onzer onafhankelijkheid en onzer vrijheden. » Schoon en juist gezegd, niet waar lezers en lezeressen? En het is dit moedig en braaf volk, dat onze bezitters aan het bewind bracht, hetwelk sinds 52 jaren, door diezelfde bezitters wordt verdrukt, van een degelijk onderwijs en opvoeding, van zijn loon beroofd, neérgeschoten als het brood vraagt, van alle politieke rechten verstooten, met opzet in</p>
<p>gelukkigen dag ook feest mede vierde en hulde aan de vrijheid bracht.</p>
