Object description Het schilderij toont de vlucht van inwoners van de stad Antwerpen na de inval van het Duitse leger op 8 oktober 1914, bij het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Op de achtergrond is het centrum van de stad te zien, met de kathedraal als herkenningspunt. Daartussen de Schelde en op de Linkeroever is een stroom vluchtelingen te zien. Beschrijving uit de veilingcatalogus: 'Om de Britten mogelijk gebruik van de haven van Antwerpen te ontzeggen en om een eind te maken aan de storende uitvallen op hun flank, beslisten de Duitsers de vesting Antwerpen te belegeren en in te nemen. Op 1 oktober begonnen de Duitsers de eigenlijke aanval. Dit schilderij heeft als titel 'L'Exode des Anversois - De Vlucht der Antwerpenaren / 8 October 1914'. Het beeldt de Antwerpenaren die de stad begin oktober ontvluchten wanneer de Duisers door de forten van de Bialmontomwalling zouden breken. Naar dit schilderij werd een litho vervaardigd waarbij bovenstaande titel wordt vermeld (zie coll. Universiteit Antwerpen, inv. MP 18.10). Een ingekaderde prent wordt bij dit schilderij gevoegd. De Duitse opmars door Noord-België had reeds een enorme vluchtelingenstroom op gang gebracht. Tijdens de belegering van de vesting Antwerpen en vooral vanaf de beschieting van de stad ontvluchtten heel wat burgers de stad. Na de val van Antwerpen op 10 oktober 1914 waren alles samen zowat één miljoen Belgische burgers in Nederland terechtgekomen. Een half miljoen waren naar Frankrijk of Engeland gevlucht.
