Object description Dit monumentale bronzen beeld brengt hulde aan Leopold de Wael (Antwerpen, 1821-1892), liberaal burgemeester van Antwerpen van 1872 tot 1892. Het werd vervaardigd door beeldhouwer Frans Joris. Centraal staat het borstbeeld van De Wael zelf, met uitgesproken bakkenbaarden en opmerkelijk grote neus. Hij wordt geflankeerd door een allegorische dame Antverpia met de typische kasteel-kroon op haar hoofd (verwijzend naar de burcht in het wapenschild van Antwerpen en ook aanwezig bij de Franse Furie, tevens te zien in het openluchtdepot) en Mercurius, de Romeinse god van handel en reizen. Het beeld werd op 8 augustus 1897 ingehuldigd op de Gemeenteplaats, vandaag de Franklin Rooseveltplaats. In 1948 besloot de Gemeenteraad het beeld naar het Albertpark te verplaatsen, en vervolgens in 1951 op te bergen in een stadsdepot. Onder het bestuur van Leopold de Wael werd de haven uitgebreid en de Scheldekaaien rechtgetrokken om doorvaart te vergemakkelijken. Deze grootschalige werken hadden echter als gevolg dat grote delen van de oude Middeleeuwse stad werden afgebroken om plaats te maken voor de moderne tijd.
