Unendlichen Schleife (1935, geut 1953-1956)
Het werk van Max Bill appelleert aan mathematische vormen, die hij met een levende substantie doordringt en met een intuïtieve exactheid weergeeft. Met een essentieel constructieve geest brengt de kunstenaar een harmonieuze zakelijke situatie naar voor. De eerste versie van de "Eindeloze kronkel" dateert van 1935, zonder dat de kunstenaar toen op de hoogte was van het Moebiusprincipe (brief van M.Bill van 10.10.1966). De mathematicus A.F.Moebius (1790-1868) ontdekte in 1858 het principe van de oneindigheid, die in zichzelf gesloten is, het symbool van de ruimte waarin men steeds verder kan gaan en toch steeds terugkeert, zodanig dat wat "binnen" was "buiten" wordt en omgekeerd. Aan de definitieve uitvoering van 1953 (versie 4) zoals ze in Middelheim in brons is opgesteld, zijn nog 3 versies van de "Eindeloze kronkel" voorafgegaan (ofwel vernietigd ofwel in de definitieve versie verwerkt): eerste in 1936 op de Triënnale van Milaan in het Zwitsers paviljoen geëxposeerd; tweede in de Kunsthalle Bazel op de tentoonstelling Neue Kunst in der Schweiz in 1938 getoond; derde op de tentoonstelling Konkrete Kunst in de Kunsthalle Bazel 1944 en op de eerste Biënnale van Sao Paulo in 1951 getoond.
