Object description Dit antieke beeld is een ‘trapezophoros’, een luxueus gesculpteerde steun voor een wandconsole of tafel. Met zijn fakkel en zijn korf met bloemen en vruchten verbeeldt het jongetje het licht en de bloei van de lente. Rond 1600 werd hij in een opschrift ook als Hesperus geïdentificeerd, de avondster. Het beeld bevond zich tussen 1618 en 1626 in Rubens’ collectie. De kunstenaar kocht het van de Britse verzamelaar Dudley Carleton, die het verwierf in Venetië. Rubens gebruikte dit heidense beeld ter inspiratie bij het schilderen van bijvoorbeeld staande Christuskinderen. In 1626 verkocht hij het op zijn beurt aan de Hertog van Buckingham. Vierhonderd jaar na zijn verblijf in Antwerpen, keert de innemende knaap terug naar zijn voormalige thuis.
