Object description Onder de psychotrope stoffen die door de Andesvolkeren werden gebruikt, lijkt snuifpoeder slechts een lokaal en kortstondig fenomeen te zijn geweest. Het snuifpoeder bestond uit fijngemalen korreltjes van de doornappel, die onmiddelijk een hevige reactie veroorzaken. Door die sterke uitwerking konden sjamanen en priesters in trance geraken, om zo te kunnen communiceren met de geestenwereld. Het poeder werd op een plaatje gelegd en opgesnoven met een pijpje. De zorg waamee deze attributen zijn vervaardigd, lijkt te wijzen op een gebruik door de religieuze elite, die verfijnde voorwerpen wilde bezitten voor haar rituelen. Op het afgebeelde inhaleerpijpje is een beeldhouwwerkje in vol reliëf aangebracht dat onmiskenbaar een poema voorstelt. Hetzelfde dier zien we aan het uiteinde van de fijn bewerkte handvaten. De ogen zijn ingelegd met turkoois.
