Full text | T46 Veo LA GE fient tous les deux, la grande bête fauvage armée de la corne. Il femble conféquemment gue ces noms ne’ devroient s'appliquer qu’au rhinocéros unicorne. Dans le pays des Shan- gallas & en Nubie le rhinocéros s'appelle gir- namgiru, ce qui fignifie littéralement corne fur corne; & qui, par conféquent, annonce que Tanimal en adeux. Le texte éthiopien rend le mot de reem par celui d'arwé-harish, & la verfion des Septante le traduit par celui de monocéros ou d'unicorne. Si le rhinocéros d'Abyffinie avoit toujours deux cornes, il me fembleroit extraordinaire que les Septante Teuffent appelé monocéros, furtout ayant eu occafton de voir un animal de cette efpèce, qui fut expofé de leur temps à Alexandrie, & qui eft le premier dont Lhif- toire ait fait mention (1). La principale raifon qui a engage à traduire le mot de reem par celui d'unicorne & non de rhinocéros, c'eft qu'on croyoit que cet ani- (a) Voyez dans le premier volume Pendroit où il eft parlé de la fête que Ptolemée Philadelphe donna à fon avénement à la couronne. ? |
