L'hyène eft connue dans Orient fous le nom de deeb & fous celui de dubbah, & Eeft ce dernier que lui donnent les meilleurs naturaliftes: Arabes. En Abyflinie, en Nubie & dans une partie de Arabie, on lappelle toujours, foit qu'on parle , foit qu'on écrive, deeb ou deep; car la terminaifon eft indiffé- rente. Lerreur de quelques naturaliftes vient du mot de dubbah , qui figmifie bien une hyène, tandis que celui de dabbu, qui en approche , défigne une efpèce de finge; & quoique deeb foit aufli le nom de Fhyène, ce même mot de deeb s'applique au jackal. Les naturaliftes ayant dit que le jackal étoit un loup, le mot de deeb a été pris aulli pour le nom du loup. A Alger, cette différence eft très-marquêe. Dubbah fignifie une hyène, & le decb eft le jackal „qui court la nuit par troupes & qut chaffe «en aboyant comme le chien courant. Dubb figmfie un ours; & de-là- vient encore une Er ee Ae ie ? |
