Full text | 290 VSO VARESE point d'aiguillon; & cependant elle me fembie beaucoup tenir de lefpèce de labeille. Elle eft en même temps beaucoup plus vive, plus prompte que Fabeille, & elle reflemble en cela au taon. Son bourdonnement a quelque chofe de très-particulier; c'eft un mélange de bruit fourd & éclatant qui forme une difcor- dance, & qui me fait croire que ce bruit eft en partie produit par la vibratron des trois poils que la mouche a fur fa trompe. La verfion chaldéenne de la Bible appelle implement cet infecte Zebud, mot qui fignifie en général la mouche. La verfion arabe laps pelle Zimb, qui a la même fignification. Mais fa verfion éthiopienne lappelle ‘Tfaltfalya, qut eft le nom particulier de cette efpèce de mouche en geez ainfi qu'en hébreu. Les Grecs ont nommé cette mouche Cyno- ánia, ce qui veut dire la mouche du chien; & je crois:que ceft pour cela qu'après le retour de Fumentius les pères de Yéglife d'Alexandrie , qui corrigèrent la verfion grec- que de la Bible fur celle des Septante, appe« lèrent cette mouche Tfaltfalya Kelb, pour répondre au mot Cynomia , la mouche du ? |
