Object description Het is niet zeker geweten waar dit beeld oorspronkelijk stond, maar we weten wel dat het gemaakt werd door de Antwerpse beeldhouwer Josephus Gillis (1724 – 1773). Het werd in steen gehouwen en beeldt de Griekse mythologische figuur Perseus en diens geliefde Andromeda af. Perseus is vooral gekend als de held die Medusa onthoofdde, de monsterlijke vrouw met slangen als haar en een blik die je in steen deed veranderen. Haar gezicht is te zien op het schild dat Perseus draagt. Andromeda was een prinses die door haar ouders geofferd werd aan een zeemonster, maar door Perseus gered werd van dit tragische lot. Andromeda wordt geketend aan de rotsen afgebeeld terwijl Perseus zicht klaarmaakt om met zijn zwaard –in de hand van zijn afgebroken rechterarm– het zeemonster neer te slaan.
