Object description In 1861 werd een enorm monument ingehuldigd op het kruispunt van de toenmalige Leopoldlei, vandaag de Belgiëlei, en de Nerviërsstraat. Het was geweid aan de historische figuur Boduognat, stamhoofd van de Nerviërs, een Gallisch volk dat zich verzette tegen de Romeinse invallen. Het oorspronkelijke monument toonde Boduagnat als naakte krijger, gewapend met een lans, zittend op twee door hem gedode Romeinse soldaten. Opvallend zijn de wilde haren en nobele gelaatstrekken gehouwen in steen. In de 19de eeuw waren dit soort mythologisch-historische figuren populaire onderwerpen ten dienste van het nationalisme en patriotisme van het nog jonge België. Om verkeerstechnische redenen besluit de gemeenteraad in 1954 om het monument te laten verwijderen, het werd datzelfde jaar afgebroken. Enkel het hoofd werd bewaard en gedurende enige tijd opgesteld in de Zoo van Antwerpen. Beeldhouwer Joseph-Jacques Ducaju is tevens de vervaardiger van standbeelden van David Teniers, Leopold II en Baron Henry Leys.
