Au milieu du xu® siècle, Anvers avait des échevins. La ville était renfermée, à son origine, dans celte partie qu'on nomme encore le Bourg. Un mur très solide et très-épais s’étendait le long de l’Escau, et se prolongeait en ligne circulaire depuis la Tour des Vendeurs de poissons, derrière la rue du Sac, jusqu'au Trou-aux-Tripes (4 Pens-Gat), démoli en 4806 pour continuer les quais. Ce mur était baigné de fossés profonds remplis par l'Escaut. Cet espace renfermait le marché aux poissons , la prison, le jardin d'Aflighem, autrefois le prieuré de Saint-Maur , le Vierschaer ou maison de jus- tice, Péglise Suinte- Walburge, la rue des Nautes et celle du Sac. L'ancienne porte subsiste encore à côté de l’ancienne prison ( het Sleen ).
