Full text | La villea la figure d’un arc tendu dont le fleuve représente la corde. Sa plus grande longueur est de 2,500 mètres, sa largeur est de 4,400. L'Eseaut a, devant la ville, 450 mètres de largeur et 10 de profondeur à mer basse ; la marée monte à > mètres au-dessus. Ses eaux sont salées jusqu’à Lillo, 25 lieues de son embouchure. Devant Anvers elles commencent à être potables. Le courant du flot à la marée montante est de trois nœuds à l'heure. Anvers est appelé dans les monuments histori- ques Andoverp, Andoverpia, Anturpia, Antver- pha, Andowerpum, Anthwerp. Son origine est très- obscure et enveloppée de fables : une tradition accréditée dans le pays parle d’un géant monstrueux qui se tenaic sur les bords de l'Escaut, faisait pri- sonniers ceux qui refusaient de lui payer un tribut, leur coupait la main et la jetait dans le fleuve. Hand werpen veut dire en flamand jeter la main. Cette tradition s’appuie sur les armoiries de la ville qui portent un château surmonté de deux mains, et sur la statue du géant qu’on promène de temps immémoral dans les processions solennelles, trat- nant des captifs dont la main paraît avoir été coupée.
