Object description Dit uitzonderlijke beeld maakt deel uit van een groter monument dat vandaag niet meer bestaat. Het toont een zogenaamde “Arabische slavenhandelaar” die zich onderwerpt aan Francis Dhanis, een koloniaal officier in de Congo Vrijstaat. Dhanis leidde in dienst van koning Leopold II militaire campagnes om grote delen van Oost-Congo met geweld te veroveren onder het mom van het verdrijven van de “Arabische slavenhandelaars” en het “bevrijden” van de Congolese bevolking. Echter, na de verovering van Oost-Congo installeerde de Vrijstaat een plunderregime dat geenszins onderdeed voor dat van de slavendrijvers als het op de gewelddadige uitbuiting van de bevolking aankwam. De Vrijstaat schakelde zelf op grote schaal tot slaaf gemaakte mensen in als dragers, soldaten en dwangarbeiders Kunstenaar Frans Joris lijkt met meer passie en kunde gewerkt te hebben aan deze nevenfiguur van het grote monument dan aan het beeld van Dhanis zelf. Het gezicht van de slavenhandelaar heeft fijne subtiele trekken, zijn mantel die elegant langs zijn lichaam valt bevat talloze ornamentale details, allemaal uitzonderlijk moeilijke resultaten om te bekomen in een bronzen beeld. Het monument werd op 12 oktober 1913 ingehuldigd op de toenmalige Zuiderlei (vandaag Amerikalei), ter hoogte van de Sint-Michielskerk. In 1950 besliste de Gemeenteraad om het monument te verplaatsen naar de tuin van de toenmalige Koloniale Hogeschool gelegen naast he Middelheimmuseum (vandaag is dit de campus Middelheim van de Universiteit Antwerpen). In 1983 liep het monument ernstige stormschade op en werden de bronzen beelden in depot ondergebracht, eerst op de campus van de Universiteit, later in een stadsmagazijn.
