Object description Dit beeld maakt deel uit van een groter monument dat vandaag niet meer bestaat. Het oorspronkelijke monument bracht hulde aan officier Francis Dhanis (1862 – 1909) en diens activiteiten in de Congo Vrijstaat, waar hij in dienst van koning Leopold II militaire veldslagen leidde om grote delen van Oost-Congo met geweld te veroveren. De Antwerpse beeldhouwer Frans Joris maakte de drie bronzen beelden die het monument omvatte: het beeld van Dhanis zelf, het beeld van de “Arabische slavenhandelaar” (tevens te zien in het openluchtdepot van de collectie Kunst in de Stad) en het beeld van een anonieme, naakte Congolese vrouw en haar kind. Dhanis, met markante snor, wordt afgebeeld als een heroïsch figuur gekleed in militair uniform en typische tropenhelm, het geweer zegevierend in de lucht geheven. Het monument werd op 12 oktober 1913 ingehuldigd op de toenmalige Zuiderlei (vandaag Amerikalei), ter hoogte van de Sint-Michielskerk. In 1950 besliste de Gemeenteraad om het monument te verplaatsen naar de tuin van de toenmalige Koloniale Hogeschool gelegen naast he Middelheimmuseum (vandaag is dit de campus Middelheim van de Universiteit Antwerpen). In 1983 liep het monument ernstige stormschade op en werden de bronzen beelden in depot ondergebracht, eerst op de campus van de Universiteit, later in een stadsmagazijn. Daar verdween jaren later het beeld van de Congolese vrouw en haar kind, alsook de linkerarm van Dhanis, de onderkant van zijn geweer en zijn sabel.
