Full text | 332 Route 27. GENOELS ELDEREN. From Muaestricht chancel arch and over the arches of the nave are some finely carved heads. Behind the N. altar, and in the nave and aisles are 8 fine incised slabs of knights and ladies, 1279-1523. The Castle, opposite the Church, belongs to the Count de Renesse, who has a large collection of antiquities. At GEnorLts ELprrEen, 3 m. from Tongres, is a small cruciform church in which are’3 incised slabs, 1450-90; on the altar of S. chapel are 2 fine ivory carvings of XI cent. repr. the Annunciation, Visitation, and our Lord sustained by 2 angels trampling under foot the asp and basilisk, the lion and dragon. In the Sacristy are a chalice of silver gilt, c. 1460, given to the church by John de Elderen, Prince Bp. of Liege; a chalice of copper gilt with the emblems of the Passion, c. 1520, anda Pyx of silver gilt; XVI cent.’ At the end of the avenue leading up to the chateau is a column commemorative of the victory of Lafeld, covered with inscriptions and French names. The road to Maes- tricht traverses the field of battle, where the allies under the Duke of Cumberland were beaten by the French commanded by Marshal de Saxe, 2 July 1747. In the Church: of Vuiyrincen, where Louis XV assisted at mass just before the battle, is still preserved a silver monstrance adorned with the arms of France pre- sented by that monarch. 12 kil. Dame at 5.304. m. 12, 1.30 and 3 Pp. m., and on Mon., Thurs. and Sat., at 2.30 p. m. in 3 1/4 hrs.; fare, 4 fr. A canal has been constructed between Maestricht and Liege so as to maintain a passage for vessels at-all seasons. After passing the Fort of S. Peter, U., the first ohject to remark is the ruined Castle of Lichtenberg, the tower of which was constructed by the Romans ; close to it is the entrance 9 to the quarries (p. 324). The summit of the mountain is crowned by the Chateau Caster. Eyspen; 7rt.; here is the Dutch custom-house. At Fouron tt 3 Come, 4 m. from here, are the remains of a Roman villa covering * a large extent of ground; excavations made here by order of the te fH wmas Govt. in 1841 brought to light. a hypocaust, baths, some statues 2: |
