In | De | the upper part of the tower is an enormous mass of timber which 1 tae | supports the bells. The Cloister, not completed till theXVcent., .. } is fine; the tympanum of one of the doors leading into the church 4 is carved with a figure of Christ trampling under foot a dragon | 1 and basilisk, XI cent. Behind the choir is another early piece of i sculpture in low relief repr. the investiture of S. John the Lamh as Bp. of Maestricht by King Dagobert. On the high altar isa 5s tabernacle with figures, etc., which work by mechanism, a speci-. - men of Dutch bad taste. The statue of the B. V. over her altar, . 1236, was formerly in the Franciscans’ Church : here are alsoa 8 carved pulpit, and in N. aisle a good painting of the Crucifixion. |. In the Treasury over the N. E. portal are preserved, 1, a copy in a copper of a magnificent gold cross that belonged to the Greek |i Empr. Romanos, given to the Church by Philip of Suabia; on | o one side are enamels of Christ, the B. V.,SS. Michael, Gabrieland || Demetrius, and on the other an inscription giving the history of |1 the tree from the wood of which the cross was made; the original || was given by the canons to Pope Gregory XVI; 2, a curious cross (2 “with cabalistic inscriptions; 3,.a reliquary of XIII cent. con- }- taining a portion of the girdle of the B. V.; 4, areliquary bust ji of S. Bartholomew and another of S. Lambert; 5, the.dalmatic of S. Lambert. S, Matrnew’s, in the Rue Bois-le-Duc, is a 3 aisled building 2 of XV cent. with a W. tower. From 1632 to 1794 it was, with | the exception of the few years that the town was occupied by the s i French, employed for the Protestant service. S. John Baptist’s, originally the Baptistery of S. Servais, |; } erected in the latter halt of the XII cent., was almost entirely y rebuilt in the XII cent.:it is a 3 aisled building with pentagonal apse to chancel and square W. tower surmounted by an octagonal lantern, 4403-50, 223 ft. high.
