Full text | 318 Route 25. MAESTRICHT. From Landen the interior is adorned with paintings by T. Van der Schuur, 1667. The walls of the Salle des Princes are hung with fine tapes- He try, repr. the history of the Israelites in the desert, woven at the hee} Hague in 1704: 3 other rooms on the ist floor are adorned with embossed leather. Here are also several good paintings of the eDutch school and a public Library open daily from 9 to1. The anct. Hotel de Ville, callet het Dinghuis, Rue du Grand Staat, was erected in 1450. The Cathedral-of S$. Servars, founded by S. Monulph and originally dedicated to S. Peter, isa fine building; its plan is a Jatin cross, 239 ft. long by 78 broad: the body of the Church is divided into a nave and aisles by 16 pillars supporting round ar- ‘ches; with the exception of these and some capitals which support the vaulting of the aisles, the Nave and Aisles, erected c. 1010, have completely lost their Romanesque character since the XV went. when a pointed vault was substituted for the anct. wooden ceiling, and Jarge traceried windows for the small round headed openings : arow of chapels was at the same time added to each of the aisles; The Grypt, which extended beneath the intersection of the cross and the most anct. half of the choir, escaped alteration and remained intact till 1806, when it was almost entirely demo- lished. The Choir was originally terminated by a flat wall; the semicircular apse and the 2 square towers by which it is flanked were added at the commencement of the XII cent; they are belted on the exterior immediately beneath the cornice by an open gallery _-of small arches supported by small columns the capitals of which -are finely sculptured, a feature common in the churches along the Rhine and lower portion of the Meuse. The Narthex, at the W. ‘end.of the church, ded. to the B. V. and improperly called the ‘chapel of Charlemagne, is doubtless the latest Romanesque part of the building; in deeds of XIII and XIV cent. it is called Néew- werk : its plan is a rectangle, the extremities of which form 2 square towers; the capitals, etc., of the interior of this portion of ithe church are richly sculptured; the 3 campanile which sur- ‘mount the exterior were erected in 1770 : its W. end, originally ; pierced by 3 doors now blocked up, is strengthened by a massive BI ‘buttress. The Choir, Narthex and Aisle Chapels are all consi- -derably raised above the body of the church; formerly there were 2 other Chapels opening into the Trans. by large Romanesque ar- ches, one of these has been destroyed and the other converted into a vestibule. Beneath the E. arch of the Narthex formerly stood a fine Romanesque altar, mutilated on the reopening of the church in the time of Napoleon I and removed to the a S. trans. where it now is; it consists of a plinth from which rise ! 6 columns of black marble supporting a molding above which is |
