lod holding the Infant Christ on her knees : in the upper compart-
cajment is a figure of our: Lord enthroned in the act of crowning

whole is surrounded by an inscription.
| Theside Porchat W. end of S. aisle, c. 1230, 32 ft. long by

of French Cathedrals; the tympanum, divided into 3 compartments, _
sourepr. the Death, Assumption and Coronation of the B. V., the
[o9, colossal statues of Abraham, Moses, David, SS. John Bap., Joseph,
‘John Evang. and Servais, and the statuettes of the Prophets and
¢& Apostles in canopied niches are beautifully sculptured. F
On N. of N. aisle is a fine cloister erected in the XV cent.;
“102 Some portions of the Romanesque cloister which it replaced still
remain; e. g. 2 doorways, the tympanum of one of which is
s adorned with sculpture in low relief repr. our Lord enthroned in
a vesica piscis with emblems of the 4 Evangelists.
The interior of the choir has been grossly disfigured with wood-
iow work and plaster. The medallions, containing busts of S. Monulph
bos and §. Gondulph sustained by angels, were sculptured at Rome :
i the 3 windows in the apse are filled with very poor stained
|elass repr. the Annunciation, Adoration of the Magi and Pre-
4) sentation by MM. Cartiser of Wyck, 1841. In 8: Trans. is a
sf painting by C. Schut of S. Servais receiving the pastoral staff from
| an angelin the Cathedral of Tongres : in the N. Trans. is another
by 7. Schaepkens of Maestricht repr. the Apotheosis of 5. Servais;
/over the Altar of S. Servais’ is his statue carved in wool, XIII
} cent.; he is repr. crushing with the point of his pastoral staff a
dragon at his feet symbolical of Arianism; this statue is painted
+ and gilt, the orphreys, elc., are ornamented with jewels : the
mitre and crosier have been modernized. In the Chapel of S. Bar-
bara is another statue of the same Saint of XV cent, and a carved
Confessional of XVII cent. Here are also a Descent from the
3 Cross by A. Van Dyck formerly in the Abbey of Maeseyck; and
292 large paintings hy G. De Craeyer of S. Thos. Aquinas and
ii. S. Hyacinth, formerly in the Dominican church. The monument
5) to of Count Germain Frederic de Berg’s Heerenberg and his wife,
p90! 1669-82, was also brought from there. In the easternmost Chapel
2 ta of S. Aisle is preserved the Noodkasse or Shrine of S. Servais
io, of copper gilt made in the early part of the XIIL cent. to replace
a6 an older one given in 732 by Charles Martel in conformity with a
