From Landen VII cent.; the present building, of late 3rd pointed style, has been recently restored; the tower dates from 1667; here are a High Altar carved in wood and presented by the head of a Teutonic Commandery near here, an elegant holy water stoup, and a reliquary bust of 8. Maurice. The Beguinage, ded. to S. Barbara, was founded in 1286 by Henry de Bergh, Bp. of Liege. The Maison Communale is of the XVII cent. The houses are numbered consecutively from 4 to 3098. This town, seated on the junction of the Jaar and Meuse, owes its Origin to a fort built by Drusus, c. 41 B. C., when marching against the Germans: it was called by the Romans Trajectum superius or Mose trajectum. In 346 S. Servyais, foreseeing the invasion of the Huns, transferred the seat of the bishopric from Tongres hither ; the 19 Bishops who succeeded him, prior to its removal to Liege in 720, were all canonized. After the fall of the Roman empire Maestricht became part of the new kingdom of the Franks, whose sovereigns had a palace here in which Clo- taire I and Dagobert TIL resided for some time. In the VI cent. it is mentioned as a city by S. Gregory of Tours; in 532 Childe- bert I held a feudal court here. On the division of the empire of Charlemagne in the IX cent. it fell to the share of Lothaire. In the XI cent. it was an imperial city, and in 1204 was, with its dependence, the County of Vroenhof, given by Philip IL, King of the Romans, as a fief, to Henry I, Duke of Brabant; the par- ishes of Notre Dame and S. Peter were however subject to the Bp. of Liege: this double govt. gave rise to many dispntes which were finally settled by an imperial decree in Feb. 1283 explaining and determining the respective power of both princes and the govt., henceforward common and undivided, of the entire town: |
