to Liege. LIEGE. Route 23. 307
S. Leonard, was established in 1803, it is esteemed one of the hest
in Europe. Close by are_the zinc works of the Vieille Montagne Co,
whose operations have greatly assisted in extending the uses to
which this metal is applied, one of the most’ recent being for
castings of large size; its products, amounting annually to 3 million
kilogrammes, are exported to all parts of the world. The Atelier
de Construction of S. Leonard, established in an old Carme-
lite monastery near the Porte S. Leonard, is one of the most
important in the country ; besides steel; files and all sorts of tools,
locomotives, tenders, waggons and steam engines are now manu-
factured here. The Royal Manufactory of small Arms,
founded in 1840 in the Suburb of S. Leonard, can produce as many
as 20,000 guns per annum. On the Quai S. Leonard is a large
linen cloth factory erected in 1828 by the late John Cockerill which
employs more than 800 hands. The establishment of M. J. Fal-
loise, who is renowned for the masterly execution and refined
taste of his inlaid works in metal, is well worth a visit.
