Route 23. 305 The Theatre Royal, founded in 1818 on the site of an old Dominican Church and opened in 1822, is an isolated building surrounded by a colonnade, designed by M. A. Dukers; it is open every night except Wed. and Sat. The company that play here is one of the best in Belgium. Behind the Church of S. Jacques is another, the Theatre du Gymnase, open on the same days. The Casino, erected 1837-9 by M. Remont, in the midst of some ornamental grounds at the foot of a mountain from which there is a fine view of the town, is well worth a visit. Eng. strangers are admitted to the balls given here; the ball-room is 135 ft. long by 30 ft. broad and 4 (3 ft. high. In the Rue Vinave d’lle is a fountain surmounted by. a statue of the B. V. and Child erected from the designs of J. Dedcour in 1696; another by the same artist in the Rue Hors Chateau has a bronze sta atue of S. John Bap., 1667. On the heights of Publemont i is the anct. Abbey of 5. Lau- rence of which a good view is obtained on entering the town from the Rly. Stat. Founded by Bp. Eraclius in 970, it was rebuilt partly in the XVI cent. and partly in 1758; the facades are orna- mented with the arms of the Abhats : the interior is very fine. Of its 2 fine churches and the cloister which united them no traces are left; the old gateway is a mixture of Romanesque, Pointed and Renaissance architecture. The Mont de Piété, erected in 1623, was originally a maga- zine for colonial produce belonging to arich citizen named Curtius. Its facade, pierced “hy a great number of windows, is adorned with numerous bas-reliefs, the subjects of which are drawn from Esop’s fables. The Halledes Drapiers, founded in 1927 by Louis de Surlet, was rebuilt in 1845 and partly again in 1788; it is now used as an industrial school. Hospitals, etc. The principal are the Hospice for incurable | women with a chapel and large garden attached, Rue du Verd- | bois, founded by the Baron de Surlet, Vicar General of the diocese in‘4701; it contains 180 beds and is served by Sisters of the Convent of S. Charles; the Hospice de la Maternité, Rue des Carmes; Hospice for male lunatics, Rue Voliére, cared for by the Cellites or Lollard Brothers who established themselves here in 1467; that for female lunatics, who are cared for by the Sisters of S. Charles, occupies what was formerly the Convent of 8. Agatha founded in 1482; the Hospice des Orphelins, Rue Aigmont, founded in 1622 and rebuilt in 4837; the Asylum for Deaf-Mutes aad Bliud, Rue Aigmont, founded in 1820; the House of Refuge established in the old Convent of the Dames of the Holy Sepulchre, in 1846; the Hospice de Baviere, |
