On 11 Oct. 1746 the hattle of Rocoux was won by the French under Marshal Saxe over the allies just outside the gales. In 1789 the Liegeois rose in arms against their Bp. for the last time. In 1792 the principality was invaded by the French, and in 1795 Liege was named chief town of the Dept. of the Ourthe. In 1844 it was occupied by the allies : its citizens took an active part in shaking off the government of Holland in 1830. Liege is at present divided into’ 4 quarters and has 9 suburbs; it has continued to be the seat of a bishopric, since 1801 depen- dent on the archbishopric of Mechlin. No town in the whole of Belgium has been so much improved of late years as this; the Meuse has been canalized and the inundations, to which the town was forly. very subject from the rapid swelling of the river, consequently no longer occur. It is entered by 9 gates, the most remarkable of which is that of Amerceur. On the N. W. it is defended by a vast citadel erected in 1820, and on the E. by the fort of la Chartreuse. The anct. city of S, Lambert has become of late years a rich manufacturing town : its staple manufactory is that of fire-arms; the town is, in fact, one huge armoury, and the military arms here made surpass in quality those produced in England for the same sum; as a consequence a great quantity of small arms are sold by the Liegeois to other nations, particularly to Russia, 8. America, Egypt, and Turkey. The saddlery is also very good and large quantities of a peculiar kind of coarse cloth are manu- factured here. The principal cause however of the commercial prosperity of Liege is the great abundance of coal in the neigh- hourhood; the mines are worked upon very scientific principles ; some of them are so near the town that their galleries are carried under the streets and in some cases even beneath the bed of the Meuse; these mines, which formerly supplied not only Belgium, hut Holland also, have of late become inadequate to supply the home consumption and the importation of coals from England is now permitted. S. Pauw’s, formerly a Collegiate Church, but since 1802 the Ca- thedral, was founded in 968 by Bp. Heraclius. It was rebuilt ¢. 1280, the Choir of very pure style is of this date; the sidc- chapels were constructed in 1528; the vaulting of the nave in 1557 ; the upper part of the tower with the spire in 1813; the chimes which it contains were formerly in the Cathedral of S. Lambert. The proportions of this Church strike one as being very good; the Nave is 299 ft. long, the Choir 84 ft. long and 82 ft. high: it is being restored under the direction of M. Delsaux who designed the new sacristy on N. of choir; the arabesques in style of Renais- |
