Full text | 296 -Route 23. LIEGE. From Mechlin sance, 4579, which adorn the vaulting, have been carefully re- painted, and the interior walls of the tower and of several of the side-chapels disencumbered of plaster, by which process a series of arcading and panel work have been brought to light together with several paintings. The stained glass window in S. Trans., 1530, was given by Dean Houten; it repr. the Coronation of the B. V., the triumph of the Church over the Synagogue, and the Conver- sion of S. Paul; those in the choir are of a later date and far inferior. The small window of the Annunciation in style of XV cent. in the chapel of the Chapter is by J. B. Capronnier, Among the most notable works of art which adorn the ivterior of the church are 4 paintings: the Assumption of the B. V. by G. Latresse which has suffered from being retouched; the 4% Doctors of the Church by E. Quedlin; the Baptism of Christ by J. W. Carlier ; and S. Charles Borromeo praying for the plagne-stricken by B. Flemalie; a bronze Crucifix over the principal entrance and a Dead Christ in the tomb of marble, both by J. Delcour, and a marble statue of the B. V. by R. Arnold, a Carthusian monk and native of Liege, XVII cent. The new cedar wood pulpit is by Geefs; it is adorned with 8 while marble statues which are too large for the niches in which they are placed; the statue of Religion. placed between those of S. Peter and Paul is very defi- cient in expression, while those of S. Hubert and S. Lambert oc- cupy a position beneath the staircase little worthy of those great prelates : the best figure is that beneath the pulpit at the back ; it represents Satan chained and crushed but still living. In the Cloisters on the S. of the Church are several fine incised slabs of ecclesiastics amongst which is one of a Deacon. The treasury of the Church contains some splendid reliquaries which were transported to Hamburg on the jnvasion of the prin- cipality by the French, and brought back in 1803: the principal of these are, 1, The Reliquary of the Holy Cross given by Fre- deric of Lorraine, Archdeacon of Liege and afterwards Pope with the title of Stephen IX, who died in 1088: it is square and con- tains 6 oz. of solid gold; in the centre on the cross is a figure of our Lord, beneath on either side stand Adam and Eve, and above 2 angels with scrolls; the background is beautifully enamelled, the whole is protected by a piece of rock crystal measuring 6 4/2 by 4 inches. 2, A Byzantine painting of the B. V. and Child covered with silver filigree work. 3, A reliquary bust of S. Lambert of silver gilt, 5 ft. 7in. high and 8 ft. in circumference at the hase; it was designed and executed 1505-13 at the expense of Bp. Everard dela Marck by H. Zutman, a native of Liege, and cost 100,000 crowns equal to .£ 19,600 sterling: the base is di- yided into 6 compartments in high relicf; these repr. 1, S. Lam- |
