Full text | to Liege. LIEGE. Route 23. 303 The Church of §. Vincent at Fétine, erected in 1009 by Baldric If, was rebuilt 1724-34; that of Cornillon, at the foot of the Montagne de la Chartreuse, is very anct.; it was here that the B. Juliana was ordered in a vision to solicit the institution of the festival of Corpus Christi. Besides these there are 2 desecrated Churches, that of the Augustinians on the Poulevard d’Avroy, founded in 1224 and rebuilt by B. Renoz in the latter half of the XVIII cent., and S. Andrew’s, on the Place du Grand Marché, founded by Bp. Farabert in 951 and rebuilt in 1765 by B. Renoz. The Pacats pe Justice, formerly the Palace of the Prince Bps. of Liege, was founded by Bp. Notger in 978, burnt in 1185, rebuilt by Bp. Otbert, again burnt in 1505, recommenced by Card. 3p. Erard de la Marck in 1808 and completed by his successor in 1339. In the XVI cent. it was considered one of the finest palaces in the world; Margaret of Navarre, Queen of Henry IV, who lodged here in 1577 describes it in her Memoirs as « a most splendid and convenient palace with fine fountains, many gar- dens and cloisters, the whole painted, gilt, and adorned with rich taarbles tosuch a degree that nothing could he more magnificent or delicious. » In-4734 the’ principal facade and the upper story of 2 sides of the quadrangle were destroyed by fire; these were rebuilt in 1737 by Anneessens of Brussels, this facade with a por- tico adorned with columns of the Composite and Corinthian orders does not harmonize at all with the rest of the building. To the rear of this are 2 large quadrangles one of which is surrounded by a cloister supported by depressed round arches which spring from 60 thick stunted pillars of blue stone, bulging and carved much after the fashion of a modern silver candlestick. These pillars, carved with chimerical figures and capricious arabesques, were executed by F. Bordet, a native of the town; they have a striking effect and somewhat resemble those of the ducal Palace of Venice : no two of them are alike. Beneath’ this aveade are little stalls where small articles of every day use are exposed for sale. A brick tower rising over the roof (formerly there were 4, crowned with steeples which had a pearshaped swelling), origi- nally the watch-tower, now serves as a prison. With the excep- tion of the principal facade and the towers, the entire Palace has been restored hy M. Delsauw, 1848-86, and anew wing built to serve as the Hotel of the Provincial Govt. The exterior is passable, but the interior arrangements serve only to display the utter incompetence of this architect, and his ignorance of the true prin- ciples of medieval art. In front of the Palace is the Place S. Lambert where stood theanct. Cathedral ded. to that Saint, thenumerous chapels of which were adorned with statues of gold and silver, while around the |
