Full text | 300 Route 23. LIEGE. From Mechlin carried off from Milan at the taking of that town by the Empr. Henry V, who gave them to Bp. Otbert in recognition of the help given by the Liegeois during the siege : immediately above them, on the lower rim of the basin, are these verses: BIS SENIS BOBUS PASTORUM FORMA NOTATUR QUOS ET APOSTOLICA COMMENDAT GRATIA VITE, OFFICIL QUE GRADUS; QUO FLUMINIS IMPETUS HUJUS LAETIFICAT SANCTAM PURGATIS CIVIBUS URBEM. Here are also a few good paintings; the Exaltation of the Cross, by B. Flemaille, S. Michael by P. Defour, the Crucifixion and S. Bartholomew by E. Fisen. The original entrance to the church ' was.on the N., the actual portal having been formerly occupied by a chapel. S. Faith’s, fonnded in 1108 by Bp. Othert, contains a painting of the B. V. by W. Damery. S. Antony of Padua, originally a Conventual Franciscan church, founded in 1244, has been much modernized; the facade dates from c. 1620. The carved wood-work in the choir with busts of the Apostles in medallions, the inner portal, the organ-loft, 4613, anda painting of the Nativity are worthy of notice. Notre Dame, Rue Hors Chateau, originally the Church of the Carmelites; built in 1617, has a remarkable facade erected in 1642 and ornamented with 2 Hons sculptured by J. Dedcour. At the French Rey. it was turned into an entrepot : since 1838 it has belonged to the Redemptorists. S. Martin’s, on an eminence which commands the town, was founded in 962 by Bp. Eraclius, who, through the intercession of S. Martin, had been cured of a malady pronounced incurable by his physicians; he established 30 canonries here. The church was burnt in an outbreak of the people, 2 Aug. 1312, when 200 nobles, who had ‘taken refuge therein, perished in the flames; it was shortly after rebuilt; the present edifice however, designed by P. De Ryckel, dates only from 1842; itis a 3 aisled cruciform church, 230 ft. long by 70 wide, with a lofty W. tower. The Choir and N. Aisle have been carefully restored 1850 5; the Tower is now in course of restoration, it is to be hoped that M. Del- sauc’s plan of a lofty spire will not be carried out. The present entrance to the church is in. trans. : traces of the original porch may still be seen in the S. Aisle. The windows in the apse of the choir and trans. are filled with stained glass of the XVI cent. In the Choir are landscapes by J. B. Juppin : at the W. end of the church is a Chapel ornamented with 410 medallions in marble |
