the cloister and in a garden adjoining are some incised slabs of
the XIV cent. :
S. Servais, founded c. 945 by Bp. Ricaire, was rebuilt in 1584;
the windows of the aisles, repr. the Nativity, Adoration of the
Magi, Presentation, Resurrection, Ascension and Assumption, date
from about that time, they have been recently restored, the arms
of the contributors to this restoration are inserted in the place for-
merly occupied by those of the donors destroyed at the French Rev.;
the 9 windows of the choir in the style of the XVI cent. are by
J.B. Capronnier; they repr. 1,8. Servais receiving the Episcopalring
aud staff; 2, his being sent to Constantius by the Empr. Magnen-
tius; 3, his expulsion from Tongres and prophecy of its destruc-
tion; 4,his journey to Rome; 5, bis reception of the silverkey from
the Pope; 6, his imprisonment by the Huns; 7, his baptizing their
king; 8, his causing a fountain to spring up by striking his staff
into the ground; 9, Bp. Ricaire building the Church near this
source : the arms are those of the donors. The Church has been
recently bespattered with so called decorations cousisting of imi-
tations of niches, statues and carved work; the gasfittings are also
specimens of modern had taste.
S. Margaret’s, founded by Bp. Eraclius, in 968, has been re-
built.
S. Walburga’s, erected in 1614, contains nothing of interest.
S.Remacle, founded c. 976 by Reinier, son of the King of
Navarre and Dean of S. Lambert, was burnt in 1073 and again
in 1612, shortly after which it was amost entirely rebuilt.
S. Pholien was founded in 1189 by the 3 sons of Sir Eustace
Desprez and consecrated by Bp. Henry de Verdun; the nave and
aisles are of this date, the chancel and trans. ave being rebuilt in
style of XIII cent. from the designs of M. Halkin: the tower was
rebuilt only a few years ago in the modern style. This church
contains 2 paintings by B. Flemalle, the Descent from the Cross
and the Last Judgement.
S. Nicholas’, founded in 1805 hy the Observantine Franciscans
and burut in 1691, was rebuilt in 1714.
The Church of the Benedictines, Boulevard d’Avroy,
erected in 1627, contains some good carved woodwork: that of
the barefooted Carmelite nuns, Rue au Potay, near the Porte
Vivegnis, founded in the XV cent., was burnt in 1468 shortly
after which the present building was erected. The Church of
the Seminary, formerly a Premonstratensian Abbey founded in
1546, was rebuilt in 1762 by Digne/fe; its plan is cruciform with
semicircular apses and a low cupola in the centre resting on 4
pendants recently painted by MW. Carpay with figures of the 4
Evangelists whose emblems.are repr. in cages! |
