TILFF, a village delightfully situated in the picturesque valley of
/ the Ourthe, is celebrated for its grotto, discovered in 1837, which
is much finer than that of Remouchamps. The distance from
Liege by road is 5m. and by water 7 1/2 : the latter is the
youte usually chosen; a boat leaves ieee ae morning at 8 for
| Tilf starting from the Pont de la Bouverie: the scenery is yery
fine, but the river is rapid and shallow, and its navigation, if not
dangerous, at all events highly exciting, as no less than 5 cata-
racts or vennes have to be passed : for a description of the Ourthe

LOUVAIN TO DIEST.
DILIGENCE : daily to Diest by Aerschot and Montaigu from the H. de
Timpératrice at §.15 a. m., and from the H. de la Cour de Mons at 6.15 p. m.
in 4 hrs.; fare, 2 1/2 frs.: daily to Diest by Winghe S. George from the
H. du Sauvage at p.m in 3 1/2 hrs.; fare, 2 frs. : to Aerschot only,
! on Mon. and Frid. from the H. du S. Esprit at 2.30 p.m., and daily from the
H. de ’Impératrice at 5.30 p.m, inl 1/2 hr.; fare, 1 fr. 25 c¢.
Agrscnor. Inn: HA. del’Ange. 4162 Inhabs. Aerschot seated
on the R. Demer, already ranked as a town in the XIII cent.,
when it was surrounded with walls. In the XV cent. the Princes
of the house of Orleans held it as a fief, their name has’ survived
in the ruined tower now called by corruption the Tower of Aure-
lian! In 41509 Charles V made Aerschot a marquisate and later a
duchy.
The Parisa Cuurcn is a fine 2nd pointed building; the Nave
dates from 1331, the Choir from 1337; on the wall of the latter is
yf) the inscription of foundation with the architect’s name J. Pickart :
{)) the tower is of XV cent., the spire, destroyed by a storm in 1572,
was rebuilt in 1373: Here are a fine Roodscreen of elaborate
execution adorned with numerous has-reliefs and. statuettes in
excellent preservation, and some carved stalls the greater part
of which however were sold to a dealer in 1883. In front of the
screen hangs a remarkably fine chandelier of wrought iron by
» QO. Massys beneath which is buried Adelaide Van Tuylt, his 1st
wife.
